Director's Message

As we begin 2017, we must prepare for the many changes and challenges that are ahead of us.

We must be prepared to "stand up, not stand down"!  We will have to fight for healthcare as a right, not a privilege!  We must be vigilant about keeping our membership growing by signing up every new employee as they begin their jobs. We must secure "New Employee Orientation" with every district to allow us this opportunity. Medicare, social security and medical are all on the chopping block!  Human rights, women's rights, workers rights, they are all on the line!  Please be PRO ACTIVE instead of reactive!  Together we are stronger!

Hopefully you have received a "Save the Date" card for one of our six "mini" institutes this year. Please watch for your registration forms in the mail. These mini institutes are built to encourage new members, member leaders and activists to get involved. There's no cost to attend!

This year also brings a huge change for me.  I now begin my last 6 months as your Area Director. I officially retired June 10, 2016 after 27 years as a special education para educator. I am truly honored to have served you for 6 terms as your voice for Area A on the board of directors. Your continued faith and trust in my leadership will never be forgotten!  I am excited to share with you that your new Area A director is Mr. Wayne Harris. Wayne is currently the RR for region 75 and chapter president for Woodland 118. Please look for Wayne and get to know him. He will be an excellent leader and voice for Area A!

Thank you for an incredible 12 years!

In Solidarity,

Martha Penry,
Area A Director

State Supt of Ed, Tom Torlakson is asking all districts in the state to adopt a resolution.

Don't forget, download, fill out and send in the Special Power of Attorney for CalPERS. Everyone should have this form on file with CalPERS. Don't wait another minute. DO IT TODAY!

If your region or chapter is having an event, or has other news you would like to share, please send to Area A Webmaster. Once approved by our Area Director, it will be posted to our Area A website.

CSEA members gather for Annual Conference

More than 1,600 CSEA member-delegates gathered in Las Vegas for CSEA’s 91st Annual Conference. Representing their local chapters back home, they voted on 18 resolutions, adopted a budget, elected new Association officers and set the course for the year ahead. Delegates elected Ben Valdepeña as Association President, who said he is ready to lead the fight against the threats that we face and continue to build our great union’s strength and power.

CSEA resolution supports safe zones for students

In February, the CSEA Board of Directors passed a resolution entitled “CSEA Supports Public Schools as Safe Zones for all of California’s Students.” The Board of Directors encourages CSEA chapters to print and post it at their school/work sites as a symbol of CSEA’s commitment to keeping students safe.

'Inside California Education' features CSEA members on television

A new television series provides viewers with an insider’s perspective on the state’s complex and evolving education system. It features parents, administrators, teachers and classified employees—including several CSEA members.
