CSEA member named Community College Classified Employee of the Year
Grossmont College Chapter 707 member Patricia Murray was one of five community college employees to be named 2012 Classified Employee of the Year by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
On May 8, the Board of Governors formally honored Murray and the other four winners at the Chancelor’s office in Sacramento.
Murray has been a Health Science Lab Technician for 13 years at Grossmont College. She has been and is currently involved in several activities on campus. She is a member of the Classified Senate, chair of the Kudos Award program (which recognizes outstanding staff), and has assisted in coordinating the Students of Note awards program (which recognizes students that overcome obstacles while they are attending school). Murray helped the Classified Senate raise money for the Osher scholarship and has assisted with the college foundation’s gala fundraiser. She volunteers with a local Catholic high school youth group and is the adult leader for the “Justice and Service” youth group which organizes charitable activities. In the words of her nominator, “Pat is a leader who is always looking for ways to help students, improve working conditions for her colleagues, and continue Grossmont College’s standard of excellence.”
The four other winners were Doris Brinkley-Hankins of Peralta Community College District, Kim Christiana of Contra Costa Community College District, Scott Ludwig of West Valley-Mission Community College District and John Welch, Cabrillo Community College District.
The Classified Employee of the Year Award was established in 2008. Since then, the Award has been given out annually to honor community college classified employees who demonstrate the highest level of commitment to professionalism and community colleges. Recipients are nominated by members of their college/district community and endorsed by their local Board of Trustees. Award recipients are selected by representatives of the Board of Governors for California Community Colleges, the Chancellor’s Office, and the Foundation for California Community College and must have a record of outstanding performance of professional activities, as well as a record of active participation on campus and beyond.
The Classified Employee of the Year Award is supported through a grant from the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Each recipient receives a $500 cash award and a commemorative plaque.
